Becky Price, LCSW, is a compassionate therapist and healer who shares insights on emotional and physical healing, body grief, and personal growth through her blog.

Your body is not a trend, rather it is your vessel to help you get through your life. Something we often forget is that our bodies are always doing the best they can for us. This can be really hard to believe at times when our bodies “aren’t working” the way we want them to, when our bodies gain or lose weight or functions change due to aging, injury, or illness, but it’s true.
I work with clients via telehealth on an individual basis who are looking for a path to heal their relationship with their body, whether it’s from years of poor body image or newly encountered body grief via injury, and this concept of our bodies doing the best they can for us is something I spend a lot of time with my clients on. It’s something I spend a lot of time with myself on, too. Therapists are human!
This can be a tough concept to keep in mind when we are constantly inundated and sold the idea of extreme thinness. The onslaught of GLP-1 medication ads and “skinnytok” can feel inescapable in our capitalistic society. It’s not happening in a silo though–this concept of extreme thinness is being sold to us at a heightened rate at the same pace that fascism is being pushed on us here in the United States. And how does fascism function best? Through control! Control of our bodies, and ultimately, through compliance. These two structures–late stage capitalism and facism are so interwoven but also highly dependent upon one another.
So for those of you that are feeling stuck or looking for a call to action at this moment–what if it’s for you to take up more space rather than shrink? To fuel our bodies and accept ourselves as we present in this very moment. To speak truth to power, and in fact, speak even louder than we have before, and for people with less power and privilege than ourselves. Perhaps that is our collective purpose, rather than weight loss, at this time.
